Igor Pires Reis - 2022-03-10 16:20:24
My name is Igor Pires Reis, and I am a doctoral student at the Graduate Program in Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation – PPGECB from State University of Santa Cruz – UESC, Bahia, Brazil. It is with great satisfaction that I inform that your articles have helped and inspired me in the development of my thesis entitled: “Techniques and procedures for evaluating structural attributes of the canopy through digital images and their applications in the conservation of tropical forests”.
The thesis is divided into three chapters: In the first chapter we carried out a systematic review of the methodology of Digital Hemispheric Photography applied in the extraction of forest canopy attributes variables. In a way, we found that works published since the year 2000, where the technique emerged more sharply, and even today have a deficit of methodological information, especially in the pre-processing stage of digital photographs. Therefore, in my second chapter, I have carried out methodological protocols to improve and optimize the pre-processing of these digital images, using ImageJ and other software that reduce biases from lenses, exposure, etc. By adventure, I have been following your work and I see that you have developed a prominent method using smartphones with front cameras and, in particular, due to the angle of obtaining these photos it is possible to photograph them in full-frame quality.
I am very interested in knowing more, and even contributing, and because of that, I would like to make you a proposal: I am having the opportunity to do a sandwich doctorate for now and I am interested in inviting you to be my co-supervisor. The internship would be financed by CAPES (Fundation linked to the Government of Brazil) with a stay of up to 6 months in the foreign country. As I am already at the end of my doctorate, I would like to create collaborative links to improve my thesis. What do you think of the idea? Do you think it is possible or do you have availability for such a demand? It would be very gratifying to have this experience and still get to know a new country and a new culture.
In addition, thank you for your attention, and I thank you very much for your scientific contribution to the topic.
